Merchant Question

Merchant Account vs Payment Processor

Understand the difference between the merchant-side acquiring relationship and the technology that processes payment transactions.

Merchant account

A traditional merchant account is an acquiring relationship or account arrangement used for card acceptance and settlement.

Payment processor

A processor handles transaction messaging and payment-processing functions. Many modern providers combine processing with acquiring, gateway and other services.

Why the distinction matters

The distinction helps when comparing contracts, settlement arrangements, support responsibilities and pricing. Modern PSPs may hide much of the underlying architecture from the merchant.
